“Positioning culture within Canadian municipalities” by M Sharon Jeannotte, Ben Dick and Kelly Hill out now in Culture and Local Governance

OCRG Project Manager Ben Dick (currently on leave) and founding Co-Chair Sharon Jeannotte recently teamed up with local culture research consultant Kelly Hill to write “Positioning culture within Canadian municipalities”. The article, which was published in the December issue of the academic journal Culture and Local Governance looks at how responsibility for cultural planning as broadened the role of municipalities in strategic policy making (and implementation) in relation to the province.

Through providing historical context, they are also able to explain how culture in many cases came to be seen as a branch of recreation and how some cities are working to embrace these ties (through increased community/public art operations) while others are reassessing or attempting a strategic realignment of culture to embrace it’s economic and/or ‘full circle’ (economic, social, wellbeing) benefits.

The article is available open access here.
