The 2019 Labour Market Information Study of Canada’s Cultural Workforce was recently released by the Cultural Human Resources Council. The report, available in English and French, looks at a range of labour market data for the cultural workforce primarily broken down by industry (domain) and sub-industry (sub-domain) including employment participation, number of businesses, salaries, productivity, demographic diversity, and projected growth.

The study also talks about the limitations of existing data which may not be entirely fit for purpose when it comes to capturing the reality of the cultural industries which include much larger than average percentages of self-employed and ‘gig’ workers and in which holding multiple jobs is common.

Going beyond hard economic and participation data, the report quite significantly also includes a section describing the labour market challenges facing the culture sector – the result of focus groups in a number of different locations across the country and an online survey.

Alongside the report, the CHRC has also provided infographic-focused fact sheets for each province and industry (domain) in both official languages.

Both the reports and the fact sheets were prepared for the CHRC by The Conference Board of Canada with financial support from the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Initiatives Program.
